This song was written only weeks before
recording of Anatomically Incorrect commenced. That made it the newest
song we had at the time of the recording. I first came up with the
idea of the lyrics at Ron's. Ron, Jari and I were sitting back drinking
beers (maybe Ron and Jari were into the Scotch that night), talking about
things. It was pretty standard fare, but a few points in the conversation
inspired me to write some lyrics. The following day I had the lyrics
written. At our next practice, I brought the lyrics with me and showed
them to the guys. Jari thought they were great and took them home,
and began work on the music immediately. A couple of days later,
we were playing the song. Recording of the song began not too long
after. I can't deny that the song is written about a certain individual
who also happened to be a friend of mine. When we first recorded
the song, I changed the title to "Orange" because I thought that the title
"Purple" would make it
too obvious who the song was about. I ended up playing that version
of the song to her, and she loved it. She even told me to change
the title back to "Purple", so the vocals were re-recorded to the version
you find on the CD. This became one of the more popular songs on
the CD, and later, in our live set. Oh yeah, the original "ORANGE"
recording is pretty rare, but there might be a couple of copies on cassette
somewhere. I think I have a copy. The original vocal track
for that was erased from the master. I've also got the original "Jari
Vocal" demo, but that's another thing...heh heh heh. The campfire
version of the song was something Jari and I decided to do for fun.
We didn't tell the other guys about it until it was time to record the
vocals. I think it worked well. Now you can take an acoustic
guitar camping with you and have a Purple sing-a-long. What fun!
